About Melodie Tunney

The intersection of music and missions marks and defines Melodie Tunney’s ministry and career. Raised in a musical home – her dad was a music minister, her mom an accomplished pianist – she felt God’s calling into missions at the age of 15 and knew that music would be involved in some way.

Her career began as a vocalist with the contemporary Christian group, TRUTH where she also met her future husband, Dick, the group’s keyboard player.  She excelled as a studio singer and formed the group First Call in 1983 with Bonnie Keen and Marty McCall. Their contract with WORD records and touring with Sandi Patty led to live performances on the Grammy Awards, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and touring with Amy Grant and Bebe & Cece Winans.

Dick and Mel Tunney’s songs have been recorded by Christian artists and appeared in countless music projects, musicals, and even hymnals. The Tunney’s have also received 10 Dove Awards, several Grammy award nominations, and their song, “How Excellent is Thy Name” received a prestigious Grammy Award.

In recent years Melodie has been on the staff of several churches as Worship Minister, and has served “on mission” in Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Honduras, Mexico, and Cuba. Her resume is also filled roles as both a featured speaker and worship leader at women’s events,  mentoring young songwriters, and as author of several Bible studies for women.
